Make Work-Life Balance Your New Years Resolution

“If you ever want to be a successful entrepreneur, you need to stop doing the 9-to-5 and start doing 95.” This is according to Grant Cardone, a self-made millionaire.

And he is not the only one that believe this to be true. But there is a threat to success that is looming in the shadows, one that we have effectively turned a blind eye to. It’s called Burnout, and it is a real problem. It is not only detrimental to your business, career/work, but it can also cause harm to yourself.

If you noticed my absence on social media, my blog, and even my email marketing…it was all attributed to burnout. Believe it or not, this was my second experience with it. You would think my first time would have thought me a lesson, and not to repeat old habits.

Nope- I slowly fell back into the hamster wheel of society’s expectations and rules of ‘if you want to be successful, you have to play by a certain set rules that someone else made up’.

I simply woke up one morning in early December, and my mind and body refused to go. My brain was sea of fog, and my body was dragging and lethargic. I couldn’t power through it -trust me, I tried. I literally was forced to do nothing. My body went into self-preservation mode and shutdown on me before I could caused harm to it like the last time.

And you know what – I am so grateful it did!

After a few days my brain gave me the capacity to think and feel again, but only to reflect. I realized I was out of balance; not working in harmony with my body and higher self. This so-called exclusive way of building business/ brand was not for me, and I don’t need a 3rd burnout to confirm this.

Burnout is simply a lack of work-life balance

It can affect your physical health, mental health, family life, social life, every part of our lives can be affected by it. Not only can burnout affect entrepreneurs, but everyone existing in this – fast paced, bust your butt, get up before everybody, super mom, work even harder, go to sleep after everybody – thing called life.

It can affect the elementary school teacher, college student, stay-at-home mamas, nurses, FedEx delivery personnel- every occupation is susceptible to causing burnout. I know I am not the only affected by this.

For  2022, I refuse to be defined by my work. Instead, my work will be defined by how – I- want it to be.

Not some random person making the rules, that affects millions uniquely engineered individuals.

Will you join me? The quest is Harmony and Balance: Mind, Body, and Soul

Our success – whatever that may look like for you- is attainable, and is not limited by these ‘mandatory’ conventions. So, for the new year let’s challenge ourselves to adopt a flexible mindset when it comes to your work. A flexible mindset allows you to be forgiving of yourself. We will need constant reminders of this. Put it on a post-it note, make a mug, write it on your mirror – whatever you have to do to not allow society’s unrealistic and selfish expectations of us make us feel bad for choosing harmony and balance.

Little changes can make huge impacts.

I think the reason why the internal conversation of work-life balance being hard, is that we think we we need a grandiose change. It’s like having a deck of cards and thinking they aren’t good because you keep dealing out pairs, so you think the answer is to buy a new deck of cards. When one fix is to just simply shuffle the deck we already have.

Here’s how I plan to shuffle my existing deck of cards: Mandatory self-care!

Allocating time for me to engage in physical, mental, and spiritual wellness for the next 30 days. My goal is that by the end of the month, the changes I will experience will be the beginning of new habits that will inspire me to continue them for the rest of the year.
